Meet our animals

  • A brown horse with a painted and decorated blanket standing inside a wooden stable.

    Beau

Beau was a ranch horse with a severe unexplained lameness - he was adopted in 2019 and rehabbed into pasture soundness - he is the calm and stalwart leader of our herd.

  • A brown horse with a white stripe on its face standing outdoors with a blurred background of trees and bushes.

    Arnie

Arnie was a trail horse that came to us when he decided that trailering wasn’t for him anymore. It took him 6 months to willingly walk into the barn - after a year - he happily will have lunch in a trailer again! He’s pretty reserved overall but backs up Beau as the leader effectively.

  • Brown horse with a white star mark on its face stands next to a metal water trough, holding a scrub brush in its mouth, with a purple bucket nearby and a weathered wooden fence in the background.

    Otis

Otis was given to us in 2020 as a 6 year old with unexplained lameness and back pain - while he may not be built to compete in the show ring he has no problem entertaining us with his antics here at RRF.

  • Close-up of a brown horse with a white star-shaped marking on its forehead, looking through a metal gate inside a stable with wooden walls.

    Hugo

Hugo came to us in 2020 - he was a show horse that had suffered severe vitamin E deficiency and was no longer safe to be ridden. Pasture life has given him new life! He is the fastest horse in our herd by far!

  • A black horse standing inside a wooden stable, with a person in blue jeans partially visible behind the horse.

    Tino

Tino came to us in early 2022 as a young retired show horse who was not doing well in his retirement herd - he was skinny and uncatchable and we called him the ‘Ghost’ when he arrived - he gained weight pretty quickly and soon realized getting caught meant getting a massage here at RRF!!

  • A brown horse with a white heart-shaped marking on its forehead standing behind a blue metal fence at a farm.

    Jordan

Dr. Carrie Schlachter adopted Jordan in 2015 with a severe RF foot injury - she was able to rehabilitate her back up to her previous level. of competition and had adopted her out - sadly when the adoptees could no longer ride her they decided to relinquish her to RRF. We are AOK with that!! We know she will live out a life of Freedom, Friends and Forage with us!!

  • Brown foal resting on the ground in a paddock with other horses in the background and trees beyond.

    Donnte

Our youngest recruit - at 5 years old Donnte decided he really didn’t want to be a riding horse - he has some behavioral issues that had the owner considering euthanasia so he came to us to see how the ‘other half’ lives - turns out he has a penchant for older ladies ;)

  • Close-up of a horse's face against a blue sky, with a fence in the background.

    Gunny

Gunny is a 20+ yo quarter horse from Reno - He has some significant hind end issues but he’s getting stronger by the day here at RRF!

  • A female equestrian rider in black jacket and white pants on a gray horse jumping over colorful show jumping obstacles outdoors.

    Bling

Bling was donated to RRF with injuries in her RF leg. The AIM team sponsored her rehabilitation and she is currently showing again on the Southern California circuit as an ambassador for RRF!

  • A light-colored horse standing outdoors near a wooden enclosure with a rusty metal roof, with a red truck and cloudy sky in the background.

    Pokey

Pokey had a back injury making him unrideable - and periodically very difficult to handle!! Luckily our herd dynamics understand this and give him the freedom to be who he needs to be safely. And our veterinary oversight keeps a watch on his behavior for symptoms of pain!!

  • A pig standing on a concrete surface outdoors near a door, with wet patches on the ground.

    Bonnie

Our self-proclaimed Spokespig - Bonnie is Harvey, Daisy and Peggy’s mom - just happenstance that the fam’s all back together!! Bonnie is also known as ‘the annihilator’ as she takes every fence we put up as a challenge. She for sure has lots of character - she is first in line at the animal experiences!!

  • Close-up of a black and white cow standing outdoors on a farm with a blue sky in the background.

    Slider

Slider is a14 yo steer that came to us from the San Francisco Zoo - He is enjoying some much deserved pasture rest after his 8 years as an animal ambassador!! He’s got just the cutest crooked grin!!

  • Pig sniffing on the ground outside near fallen leaves, with a wooden fence and garden tools in the background.

    Hank

Hank is an older gentleman with severe elbow dysplasia/arthritis - despite substantial doses of pain meds he’s minimally mobile - to keep him comfy he lives on a mattress/hay combo and is fed a diet of fresh veggies; fruit and chicken eggs!

  • A pig with the body of a pig and the face and hair of a gorilla, standing outdoors on dirt with a goat in the background.

    Petunia

Little Petunia came in rough shape - she was very shy and a thick crust of dermatitis on her abdomen - luckily she loves treats and is now quite happy to have her belly rubbed - but be gentle - she’s a lady after all.

  • Two piglets, one gray and one white, grazing on a pile of vegetables near a pond on a farm with a fence, small shed, and trees in the background.

    Peggy & Daisy

Daisy and Peggy are Kuni Kuni/Guinea Hog crosses - they outgrew their living space and needed someplace to expand their horizons -super friendly and of course - food motivated! Come check out their wagging tails :) They are loving their Blackberry pasture and the blackberry sheep and horse are slowly accepting them!

  • A small pig with a dark snout and light-colored hair around its face, standing on a dirt surface, with visible straw on its back.

    Gordy

Gordy came to us when a local rescue closed down - He was still a chunky monkey!! Getting the exercise of romping around 20 acres freewheeling has brought him down to a more appropriate weight. He is second in line at the Animal Experiences for treats - behind Bonnie of course!!!

  • A piglet sleeping on the ground outdoors with grass and dirt, sunlight shining, and shadows cast on the piglet.

    Harvey

Harvey lived with his mom Bonnie - underneath an apple tree!! He is a gentle soul and we are hoping that pasture life will take a few pounds off him!!

  • A man in a green jacket interacts with a small goat and a chicken in a farm setting. There are goats, chickens, and a barn in the background.

    Monty & Marty

Monty & Marty have been around! They were a part of a large grazing herd - then became personal pets - when their owner lost their property they were homeless for a short bit before landing here at RRF. We think they are going to be stars in our training classes!!

  • Three pygmy goats in a barnyard, with one goat licking another's face, while a third is partially visible in the foreground.

Neef neef, Noof noof and Nuff nuff

Three little pygmy’s came to roost in 2021 - they were rescued by a friend who wanted some that were less skittish - it took us awhile but now these guys love scratches!! They are our ‘yard goats’ lol here at RRF - greeting visitors is their job.

  • A goat standing on grass with small yellow flowers, showing brown and white fur and curved horns.

    Cleopatra

Clementine was getting a bit rambunctious with her previous owners - she took a few days to settle in here at RRF and took the whole herd on a few ‘outings’ lol - but she’s decided it’s cool here and she’ll stay with the crew :)

  • Inside a wooden animal transport trailer with four goats resting on hay, including a white and brown goat, a brown goat, a black and white goat, and a small black and white goat in the background.

    Amelia, Alice Brownie and Ava

These 4 nanny’s came together and stick together!! They are all nubian crosses and love their scratchies!!

  • A group of goats standing on hay near a pond, with a fenced pasture and farm buildings in the background.

    Barbados Sheep Flock

A local flock of Barbados sheep and their Nubian friends Shoe and Spot were in need of a home came to us in 2022 - They needed a fair amount of medical and hoof care but are now up to snuff and busy testing our fence line!!

  • Group of roosters and hens with bright red combs and wattles, standing near a stone wall. One grey and black speckled rooster perches on a rock, while other hens of various colors stand nearby.

ROOSTERS - and lots of them ....

When we started accepting roosters we wanted some to help protect our hens - it soon became clear that there is a very large need for rooster rescue - We have received 32 roosters in need of a safe place to land in the first 4 weeks of 2023. We are actively building more space to house them in a bachelor pad on the property.

  • Clementine

Clemmy came with Gordy - she kept herself in better shape but was pretty sore on arrival - she stuck to the yard for the first few months but with some more weight loss and some hoof trims she has become a wanderer often stopping by one of Dr. Carrie’s lameness exams for a cookie!
