ROOSTER RUN FOUNDATION

Friends, Freedom and Forage

Adoptions are available on a limited basis - please contact us for more information.

Donating is one of the best things you can do.

Rooster Run Foundation located at Chicken Foot Ranch in Penngrove, CA provides a safe and often permanent location for horses with behavioral or intensive physical needs, farm animals past their prime and of course unwanted roosters.

Meet our animals

  • Beau

Beau was a ranch horse with a severe unexplained lameness - he was adopted in 2019 and rehabbed into pasture soundness - he is the calm and stalwart leader of our herd.

  • Arnie

Arnie was a trail horse that came to us when he decided that trailering wasn’t for him anymore. It took him 6 months to willingly walk into the barn - after a year - he happily will have lunch in a trailer again! He’s pretty reserved overall but backs up Beau as the leader effectively.

  • Otis

Otis was given to us in 2020 as a 6 year old with unexplained lameness and back pain - while he may not be built to compete in the show ring he has no problem entertaining us with his antics here at RRF.

  • Hugo

Hugo came to us in 2020 - he was a show horse that had suffered severe vitamin E deficiency and was no longer safe to be ridden. Pasture life has given him new life! He is the fastest horse in our herd by far!

  • Tino

Tino came to us in early 2022 as a young retired show horse who was not doing well in his retirement herd - he was skinny and uncatchable and we called him the ‘Ghost’ when he arrived - he gained weight pretty quickly and soon realized getting caught meant getting a massage here at RRF!!

  • Jordan

Dr. Carrie Schlachter adopted Jordan in 2015 with a severe RF foot injury - she was able to rehabilitate her back up to her previous level. of competition for 5 years before deciding to retire her - she sponsors her care in RRF fully.

  • Donnte

Our newest recruit - Donnte decided he really didn’t want to be a riding horse - so he came to us to see how the ‘other half’ lives - turns out he has a penchant for older ladies ;)

  • Gunny

Gunny is a 20+ yo quarter horse from Reno - He has some significant hind end issues but he’s getting stronger by the day here at RRF!

  • Bling

Bling was donated to RRF with injuries in her RF leg. The AIM team sponsored her rehabilitation and she is currently showing again on the Southern California circuit as an ambassador for RRF!

  • Slider

Slider is a14 yo steer that came to us from the San Francisco Zoo - He is enjoying some much deserved pasture rest after his 8 years as an animal ambassador!! He’s got just the cutest crooked grin!!

  • Hank

Hank is an older gentleman with severe elbow dysplasia/arthritis - despite substantial doses of pain meds he’s minimally mobile - to keep him comfy he lives on a mattress/hay combo and is fed a diet of fresh veggies; fruit and chicken eggs!

  • Peggy & Daisy

Daisy and Peggy are Kuni Kuni/Guinea Hog crosses - they outgrew their living space and needed someplace to expand their horizons -super friendly and of course - food motivated! Come check out their wagging tails :) They are loving their Blackberry pasture and the blackberry sheep and horse are slowly accepting them!

  • Bonnie

Bonnie is Harvey, Daisy and Peggy’s mom - just happenstance that the fam’s all back together!! Bonnie is also known as ‘the annihilator’ as she takes every fence we put up as a challenge.

  • Harvey

Harvey lived with his mom Bonnie - underneath an apple tree!! He is a gentle soul and we are hoping that pasture life will take a few pounds off him!!

  • Petunia

Little Petunia came in rough shape - she was very shy and a thick crust of dermatitis on her abdomen - luckily she loves treats and is now quite happy to have her belly rubbed - but be gentle - she’s a lady after all.

  • Monty & Marty

Monty & Marty have been around! They were a part of a large grazing herd - then became personal pets - when their owner lost their property they were homeless for a short bit before landing here at RRF. We think they are going to be stars in our training classes!!

  • Neef neef, Noof noof and Nuff nuff

Three little pygmy’s came to roost in 2021 - they were rescued by a friend who wanted some that were less skittish - it took us awhile but now these guys love scratches!! They are our ‘yard goats’ lol here at RRF - greeting visitors is their job.

  • Cleopatra

Clementine was getting a bit rambunctious with her previous owners - she took a few days to settle in here at RRF and took the whole herd on a few ‘outings’ lol - but she’s decided it’s cool here and she’ll stay with the crew :)

  • Amelia, Alice Brownie and Ava

These 4 nanny’s came together and stick together!! They are all nubian crosses and love their scratchies!!

  • Barbados Sheep Flock

A local flock of Barbados sheep and their Nubian friends Shoe and Spot were in need of a home came to us in 2022 - They needed a fair amount of medical and hoof care but are now up to snuff and busy testing our fence line!!

  • ROOSTERS - and lots of them ....

When we started accepting roosters we wanted some to help protect our hens - it soon became clear that there is a very large need for rooster rescue - We have received 32 roosters in need of a safe place to land in the first 4 weeks of 2023. We are actively building more space to house them in a bachelor pad on the property.
